Ask the Planner: Registry Etiquette

I am confident every wedding planner has gotten this question:  ”Should I include my registry information on my invitations?”

The answer is no.  Doing so is almost universally regarded as ”tacky” and inappropriate and no bride wants “tacky” or “inappropriate” to describe any aspect of their wedding.

So how do your guests figure out where you are registered?  The most common avenues for passing along registry information are (1) shower invitations and (2) wedding websites.
Showers are most often organized by the bridesmaids, so inclusion of the registry information is appropriate because it isn’t coming from the bride herself. When you register, the store will typically provide you with fancy little cards stating you are registered at X Store. Including these cards in shower invitations is the ideal way to use them.  A wedding website it also more informative and all-encompassing than your invitation, so inclusion of your registry information on your wedding website is generally considered acceptable.

Above all, the best way to get the information of your registry out is by word of mouth. Let your closest relatives know and allow them to pass on the information.
